Hispanic Heritage Month: Bridging Gaps in Health Insurance

Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the contributions of the Hispanic community in the U.S. It also reminds us why Hispanic Heritage Month is important—to shine a light on the healthcare disparities that still exist. Many Hispanic individuals face barriers to healthcare, leading to gaps in coverage and poorer health outcomes.

Understanding the Healthcare Disparities in the Hispanic Community

Hispanic healthcare disparities are a major hurdle to overcome. For many, this stems from a lack of health insurance, with Hispanic individuals often uninsured at higher rates than other groups. This gap can lead to delays in medical care and preventable health issues.

Language barriers further complicate access. Many healthcare facilities lack bilingual staff or culturally sensitive materials, discouraging Hispanic individuals from seeking care. This leads to more misunderstandings about medical conditions and treatments.

Economic challenges faced by many Hispanic families are also hard to overcome. A significant number of people work in low-wage jobs without employer-sponsored health insurance, which means they lack insurance from their jobs while also finding private coverage unaffordable. This financial strain often forces families to prioritize immediate needs over healthcare, worsening health disparities.

These barriers contribute to higher rates of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease in the Hispanic community. Addressing these issues is crucial for reducing disparities and improving health outcomes.

Why Culturally Relevant Coverage Options are Important

When healthcare providers are attuned to cultural nuances, they can offer care that aligns with patients’ values, fostering trust and improving treatment outcomes. This trust is vital for effective healthcare, making it an important factor in bridging the gaps for the Hispanic community.

Insurance plans that cater to cultural needs can greatly enhance Hispanic access to healthcare. Coverage that includes bilingual professionals and respects traditional practices encourages individuals to seek care.

Health Insurance as a Tool for Health Equity

Health insurance is one of the most important tools for closing healthcare gaps in the Hispanic community, breaking down barriers to essential healthcare services. With the right coverage, individuals can access a broad range of medical services, from preventive care to specialized treatments, without the burden of prohibitive costs. This is particularly important in managing chronic conditions, which are prevalent in the Hispanic population due to existing healthcare disparities.

Having health insurance also increases the likelihood of regular doctor visits and timely medical interventions, which are necessary for detecting diseases early and managing them effectively. Taking a proactive approach to health not only mitigates the progression of illnesses but also reduces the reliance on emergency care, which is often more expensive and less effective in promoting long-term health.

By ensuring that more Hispanic individuals are insured, we can make significant strides towards achieving health equity. Health insurance acts as a bridge, connecting the community to necessary healthcare resources and fostering an environment where everyone has the opportunity to lead healthier lives. This also supports broader inclusion of Latinos in healthcare, helping close the gap between underserved populations and consistent care.

Overcoming Barriers to Health Insurance Enrollment

The Affordable Care Act: What it Means for Tennesseans

On March 23, 2010, then-President Barack Obama signed the Affordable Care Act (ACA) into law. More than 50 million Americans, including families with small children, lacked health insurance and could not access needed healthcare. The goal of the ACA was to bring affordable health insurance to these people. Other provisions in the ACA ensured people with preexisting conditions could get insurance at a reasonable cost and provide coverage for specific medications, such as birth control. In addition, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) prohibits insurance companies from setting annual dollar limits on how much they spend on essential health benefits for a person’s care while they are enrolled in a plan.

The ACA created Health Insurance Marketplaces where people can purchase coverage and receive financial assistance to reduce premiums and deductibles. This can help people who may have been uninsured due to limited finances or preexisting conditions. Over the years, many people, including those in Tennessee, have gained health insurance through the ACA. The rollout experienced chaos and legal challenges, but the ACA has functioned as a safety net for many Americans. Tennesseans have used the ACA Marketplace, but the process can be confusing. GetCoveredTenn is your partner for a smoother process.

How the ACA Has Impacted Tennessee Residents

In 20234, more than 555,103 Tennesseans chose health plans on the ACA Marketplace. This means that more than six percent of the people of Tennessee benefited and found affordable and comprehensive health insurance to protect themselves and their families. The ACA Marketplace allows individuals at certain income levels to buy individual policies where the federal government offsets the cost of the policies. This helps lower or eliminate the monthly premiums and makes the policies more affordable to people who make less money.

As of 2024, Tennessee has not taken advantage of the option to expand Medicaid through the ACA to provide healthcare for the people in the gray area who make too much to qualify for Medicaid and too little to benefit from the ACA. Based on the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities report, in Tennessee, some 95,000 uninsured adults in the coverage gap will become eligible for TennCare if the state expends Medicaid.

Although the Medicaid coverage gap still impacts many uninsured Tennessean, the ACA has opened a pathway for many uninsured Tennesseans to gain access to health care.

Available Resources for Tennesseans to Access ACA Coverage

Navigating the ACA Marketplace and securing coverage can seem daunting. You can access the Marketplace online at HealthCare.gov. Once you reach the website, you will have to set up an account and provide a wealth of personal information, including your income. It can become confusing, and you may struggle to determine which policy is best for you and your family.
